Puzzle #3:
This morning I came home from shabbos services and saw my wife putting a cut plant into water.  My visiting in-laws and I said nothing.  Then we all went out for lunch. When we came back, I went to shul for mincha with my father-in-law. I was the only Lei-vi there, yet I got no aliya.  Later on, at shalosh seudos we suddenly heard an unusual sound above us!  Looking up, what do you think we saw?

My solution and/or comments: Okay, now I have a copy of the Kitzur Shulcan Aruch, but thus far I haven't found anything to help on this. Anyone have any ideas where some exceptions may be listed? I've looked through the forbidden work on Shabbat and nothing lept out. There's no heading for major natural events or something like the coming of the messiah. Help!

My solution and/or comments: Cut plants in water. Out for lunch on Shabbat. Must be Sukkot. So the odd noise above could be a cat walking on the sukkah (sp?) roof, or a bird, or anything of that sort.

Here's my answer. It's Shabbos, Sukkos. Man comes home, wife is wrapping Arba-Minum in water towel. Goes out 'to the sukkah' for lunch. Goes to shul, either ain khan kohen ?(thus removing any chiuv to call a levi) or there was not a minyan. Goes back home for sudas shlishis, hears something (skach fallinmg?) looks up and sees the sky.

Please let me know the correct answer!

Kol tuv, Joseph

My solution and/or comments: OK. Times up!! Yes indeed, the cut plant was a lulav. The aliyah issue was a red herring, but probably was the result of there being no kohen present. The answer I was looking for was s'chach, but any answer that shows we are in a sukkah is right enough. Congrats to everyone who figured it out, both here and in the chat room.

My solution and/or comments: sounds like Sukkos to me. Since it was Shalosh Seudos you probably saw the stars through some Schach.

My solution and/or comments: could this have something to do with sukkot? She may be puttingthe lulav in water to keep it fresh (are you allowed to?) they went OUT to lunch -- to the SUkkah? Was the schach caving in?

My solution and/or comments: Lets see, my wife put cut carrots in water to keep em fresh for SHABBOS lunch. My father in law was the only Cohen, so I left the room to allow him to have two aliyas. I'm blind, so I didn't see anything.

My solution and/or comments: It can not be a lulav since it is muksah (can not be moved on shabbos). I could be lettuce that was being soaked. Went out to the sukkah, No cohen in shul, saw the sky (sukkot).

My solution and/or comments: She must not have cut the plant on Shabbos but before on Erev shabbos. You knew this therefore you said nothing. You went out for lunch...out to your sukkah that is. It is shabbos during the Festival of Sukkos. You got no aliyah even though you were the only Leivi because everyone else in the minyan were Cohanim except for a few Yisraelim. Therefore, the Yisraelim got the aliyahs. During shalosh seudos, the unusual sound you heard above you might have been thunder. Don't forget, you were outside your permanent house and dwelling and eating shalosh seudos in your temporary one, the sukkah.

My solution and/or comments: This happened on Shabbos Chol Hamoed Sukkos when you wife put the Lulva in water. What you saw above you was the Schach of the Sukka, and maybe a little rain.
